randel-selk
Description
Randel Selk is a human man who was married to Quilmyra, an elf. They moved from Solar to Caspin after her elven family rejected their marriage, and had settled into a comfortable life.
The Impostor
Unbeknownst to Randel, the real Quilmyra was murdered and replaced by Kayla, a doppelganger. Randel noticed his wife’s behavior change — she stayed out later, was less mature, and grew manipulative — but he attributed it to personal troubles. When she left him for Borrin, he was heartbroken but powerless; Borrin was untouchable by the likes of a common man.
“Quilmyra was the love of my life. We had found refuge from her family in Caspin. They didn’t approve of me, a human. We had many good years and had settled into a comfortable life. But one day she changed. She stayed up later. Went out more. On one of her outings, she came upon Borrin and from then on I was nothing to her as she pursued him relentlessly. I figured she’d outlive him and held out hope she would come back to me in my later years. Such a young, human thought. But I was deeply saddened by her running off with him. What was I to do? It’s Borrin. He’s untouchable by the likes of me and I loved her, or who she was. I didn’t do it. Perhaps Borrin got tired of her antics?”
Imprisonment
When the real Quilmyra’s body was found in a well years later, Borrin was convinced Randel had murdered her out of jealousy and had him thrown in the dungeon. He was left there for over a decade, his fate to be decided by Leo.
Release
During the prison break in Caspin, Leo — having spent time listening to Randel’s stories of Quilmyra — chose to release him, declaring he did not believe Randel was the murderer. Leo told him his father had kept him alive so Leo could choose his fate, and instead freed him to choose his own.
