The Voice and the Silence

The Voice A powerful entity seeking to improve the Ring of Time, but her interventions inadvertently created the Silence and the Spiral. She guides the Wardens.

The Silence A force of destruction, seeking to unravel reality back to its origin; darkness.

World Time

The Ring Time was originally cyclical, like a ball bouncing eternally, with periods of growth (The Rise) leading to an apex of power and complexity, followed by periods of collapse (The Fall) back towards a simpler state.

The Spiral  The Voice’s interventions in the timeline have disrupted the ring, creating an increasing number of concentric rings where each cycle deviates from the original.

Orthogonal Time

The Voice and The Silence experience time in a different dimension. They see The Ring as a complete object, though there are waves running through it. The Spiral is more an ever growing set of Rings. As the waves within the ring are disrupted by The Voice and The Silences’ interference, the changes ripple across, causing more deviations from the original ring.

The Untethered Spiral

After the loop is severed, and the strands of the spiral separate but are drawn back together, time becomes linear. The past is an immutable ring with a thread streaming out into an uncertain future, free from cyclical collapses. Chronomancy is severely limited, only possible at the very tip of the unfurling thread of time.

World Time was saved by breaking it’s cyclical nature. World Time and Orthogonal Time are now in alignment. Though The Voice and The Silence exist outside World Time, they no longer have foresight. The present moment is the same for them as it is for the tip of the untethered spiral.

Chronology of the Temporal War

The expansion of time from a simple Ring into the Spiral occurred through a sequence of divine interventions and counter-measures between The Voice and The Silence:

  1. The Original Ring: Time originally existed as a simple cycle: “The Fall” leading to “Rebirth” and back again.
  2. The First Interference: The Voice first brought Obel forward from well before The Fall.
  3. The Expansion: The Voice began speaking and the timeline expanded into multiple dimensions. The introduction of magic to the timeline allowed for chronomancy to begin percolating. Effects brought by Obel’s induction influenced the timeline.
  4. Fixing the Timeline (Drood): The Voice pulls Drood forward as an attempt to further fix the timeline. Chronomancy continues to percolate.
  5. Fixing the Timeline (Rurik): The Voice pulls Rurik forward to further fix the timeline. Chronomancy continues to percolate and it becomes clear that this will interfere with the timeline.
  6. The Silence Reacts: The Silence (Eyja) selects Darkest of Shadows as her avatar. The Darkest is eventually petrified.
  7. The Entanglement: Thir gets entangled into the Wardens.
  8. The Second Avatar: The Silence selects Dormaer as her avatar.
  9. Further Entanglement: Hrafn, through his Dreyson chronomancy blood, also gets tangled into the Wardens when Thir is killed but the White Raven blesses their bloodline.
  10. The Binding: Dormaer is woven into the ribbon. The Darkest is bound to the blade.
  11. The Untethering: The Warden’s sever the loop and the spiral is untethered. Time for The Voice and The Silence becomes locked into a struggle confined to only the most emergent tip. The iterations of patterns during the battle remain forevermore unchanging at the origin of time.

The Voice’s Avatars

The Voice gathers several mortals together to be her Avatars.

The Wardens Mortals chosen by The Voice to counter the Silence’s influence and protect the timeline. As they are moved around time, each begins to gain different temporal powers.

Drood - His ability to change into beasts expands into other types of creatures. Rurik - Can focus on an individual and predict their trajectory through time, allowing him to track their motions in combat. Shakule - Can see deeply into a persons history, giving him insight into who they are and why. He can see their crimes and their intentions. Thir Drevson - As a Chronomancy Sorcerer gifted his powers by the White Raven, his abilities grow in power. Hrafn - As a Chronomancy Sorcerer gifted his powers by the White Raven, his abilities grow in power greatly. He allows The Voice to use his energy to stitch World Time back together.

The Silence’s Avatars

The Silence only chooses one Avatar at a time.

First: Darkest of Shadows The first avatar of the Silence. Darkest of Shadows sought to end all life. She started the Shadow Army which she used in an attempt to gain The Vigor and become immortal. In the battle, she became petrified, leading The Silence to choosing a new avatar; Dormaer.

Second: Dormaer The second avatar, a chronomancer who creates a model of the Ring of Time (“The Loop”) to try and unravel reality. He and The Loop are destroyed when The Wardens use raw chronomancy against his arcane threads.

Third: Darkest of Shadows With Dormaer destroyed, Darkest of Shadows, still stuck in a blade, defaults as the avatar until The Silence chooses a new one.

Planar Differences

Planes can have different speeds of time.

Taking the material plane as a standard, the Shadowfel is faster. A handful of days in the material plane is several years in the Shadowfel.

Other Important Information

Chronomancy Magic that allows manipulation of time. It disrupts both The Voice and The Silence’s efforts. It becomes less effective after the Untethering. Formed when The Voice interfered with the timeline. White Raven blessed the Drevson bloodline with chronomancy, giving sorcerer abilities to Thir and Hrafn.

Eckdar Eckdar was the first modern wizard to study the magic in an arcane method. His thesis was stolen by Dormaer, however and used to build The Loop.

He accidentally contacts the Wardens the night before his thesis must be presented.

With his research stolen, he is expulsed and descends into madness. Though living in the outskirts of Megh Mell, he continues his research, attempting to contact The Wardens. He also attempts to create “life outside of time” through a mix of chronomancy and necromancy. His attempts at summoning The Wardens devastating Megh Mell.

Obel Traveled to Farfield with Enoch, Shakul, and Rurik before they became The Wardens. Obel was knocked out of time when The Voice first moved Drood.

Enoch Traveled to Farfield with Enoch, Shakul, and Rurik before they became The Wardens. Become unstuck from time due to Thir’s chronomancy interfering with The Voice’s attempts to guide the Wardens.

Deja vu A superstitious belief is experiencing Dajavu is The Voice moving you ever so-slightly back a moment, either to make your life better, or stopping you from starting a cascade of problems that create suffering for everyone.
